The Extended Essay is a core component of the IB Programme. Students are invited to explore a topic of their choice on any of their chosen IB subjects, writing a detailed essay of up to 4,000 words. It is marked by IB-appointed examiners, based on a set of specific criteria outlined in the Extended Essay Rubric.

    • Deep understanding of chosen field and effectively using key concepts

    • In-depth analysis, evaluation and synthesis of sources, data and evidence

    • Clearly structured and well-presented essay, sections should flow logically and comply with formatting guidelines

    • Detailed reflection on research process, showing how students were adaptable and overcame challenges

    • Choosing an appropriate topic: Research question should be specific and focused

    • Gathering quality sources: Use a variety of reliable sources and take note when they are referenced throughout the essay

    • Planning & outlining the structure of the essay: Essay has a clear and logical flow while avoiding unnecessary repetition

    • Show critical thinking & analysis: Assess different arguments, compare viewpoints, avoid bias and base conclusions on evidence

    • Proofreading & Citations: Eliminate any errors and shortfalls, Have proper citation styles and bibliography

THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is another core component of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. TOK encourages students to critically examine different ways of knowing and areas of knowledge. It also challenges students to explore different perspectives, recognise biases, and think about the implications of knowledge in the real world, making it a unique and thought-provoking subject in the IB curriculum.

  • The TOK Exhibition involves students presenting real-life objects or situations and reflecting on how they connect to knowledge questions. The exhibition is graded on three criteria:

    • The effectiveness of the student’s presentation and their ability to communicate ideas clearly

    • The extent to which the student identifies and explores relevant knowledge questions

    • The depth of reflection and analysis on the real-life object and its relationship to knowledge

It is essential that students explore different perspectives and potential biases, as well as critical analysis of the objects used.

  • The TOK Essay is a 1,600-word essay that addresses one of the prescribed titles issued by the IB each year. The rubrics are based on these criteria:

    • The extent to which the essay demonstrates a clear understanding of the chosen Knowledge question

    • The depth and quality of critical analysis of knowledge issues

    • How well the essay is structured and how effectively the ideas are communicated

    • The extent to which the essay shows engagement with the ideas and concepts covered in the TOK course

Students must demonstrate their understanding of TOK concepts while referencing relevant areas of knowledge.

    • Developing critical thinking skills: invite students to question assumptions, explore counterclaims, and evaluate different perspectives on knowledge claims

    • Strengthening engagement with TOK concepts: assist students in applying TOK concepts to real-world examples and situations, helping them better understand the real-world implications of TOK

    • Fostering effective communication: help students improve their writing and presentation skills, ensuring that their ideas are clearly articulated

    • Providing constructive feedback: Provide regular feedback on drafts of the TOK essay and practice exhibitions, which can help students refine their work and identify areas for improvement

internal assessments

Internal Assessments (IAs) are an important component of each subject, usually contributing between 20% to 30% of the subject’s final grade. It allows students to demonstrate their understanding and skills in a more practical and personalised manner. These assessments are internally graded by teachers and externally moderated by the IB.

    • Biology, Chemistry & Physics: students conduct a practical investigation, collect data, and analyse results in a lab report

    • Languages: students are tasked a written assignment, oral presentation, or an individual oral commentary

    • Mathematics: students to explore a mathematical concept or problem of their choice, demonstrating their research, investigation, and mathematical thinking

    • Helping students fully understand the IA requirements and rubrics for their subject
